Is South Africa's headline unemployment rate hiding the true scale of the jobs crisis?

South Africa's official unemployment rate rose 0,9 percentage points to 33,6% in Q2 2026, as 345,000 additional people joined the 8,5 million already without work. But the headline figure dramatically understates the scale of the crisis — when discouraged job-seekers, underemployed workers and the potential labour force are factored in, the composite underutilisation rate reaches 46,3%, meaning nearly half of South Africa's extended labour force is not fully employed. For young South Africans aged 15–34, the situation is most acute, with the youth unemployment rate surging 1,5 percentage points to 47,4%, underlining that the country faces not a cyclical dip, but an entrenched structural failure in job creation.
