The currency advantage on OnlyFans is real — but only for the top 1% of creators

South Africa's more than 4.6 million OnlyFans creators globally include a growing cohort of South Africans drawn by a seemingly powerful currency arbitrage: every US dollar earned converts to roughly R18. But the platform's income is brutally concentrated — 70% of all creators earn less than R3,700 a month, barely above the national minimum wage monthly equivalent of R4,779. The top 1%, however, earn an estimated R898,000 or more per year in rand terms — over three times the average formal-sector annual salary of ~R318,000 — meaning the rand's weakness is almost entirely a windfall for an ultra-small elite.
