The South African Weather Service monitors all 52 metropolitan and district municipalities across nine provinces for its August–December 2026 El Niño seasonal outlook. KwaZulu-Natal, with 11 districts under observation, accounts for more than a fifth of the national coverage — reflecting the province's acute exposure to both Indian Ocean-driven rainfall variability and interior dry spells.
