Is the rand staging its most sustained recovery in years?
USD/ZAR monthly average exchange rate, January 2025 – August 2026 (rand per US dollar)
R19.45
peak rate — April 2025 tariff shock
R16.30
rate by August 2026 — a 16% rand gain
R19.45
April 2025 peak — US tariff shock
The rand was already under pressure in early 2025, hovering around R18.50/USD, but the April 2025 US tariff announcements sent it crashing to R19.45 — its weakest level in years. But from that low point, a combination of rand-supportive local factors and a softer dollar drove a sustained recovery, pushing the rate to R16.30 by August 2026. The rand therefore gained roughly 16% against the dollar in just 16 months — its most meaningful multi-month appreciation since the post-COVID bounce of 2020–2021.
