South Africa's biodegradable plastics market is valued at USD 64 million and growing at 22.6% a year, outpacing the global rate. But no separate recycling or composting stream exists for post-consumer bioplastics, and over 80% of municipal landfills are non-compliant — so most plant-based plastics cannot biodegrade as intended once discarded.
